POSITION SUMMARY:
The Lab Technician collects and processes quality specimens in a safe manner. This position is also responsible for assisting with processing specimens using the appropriate techniques according to regulatory agencies.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
1.Follow the laboratory’s procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results.
2.Correctly identifies patient per written protocol and properly labels specimens accurately and completely, while maintaining the integrity of the specimen in relation to the test being performed.
3.Obtain blood specimens by capillary puncture or venipuncture using appropriate technique.
4.Maintains and operates test systems for optimal performance, being able to identify and resolve technical problems, utilizing quality control methods and troubleshooting techniques.
5.Adhere to the laboratory’s quality control policies, document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed.
6.Disposes of contaminated lab supplies and handles all lab specimens regarding potential health hazards according to written procedures.
7.Demonstrates proficiency in operation and maintenance of all laboratory instruments.
8.Cleans/sterilizes equipment, instruments, and work area following safety, cleanliness, and infection control procedures.
9.Ensure that all lab equipment is maintained and calibrated following manufacturers’ recommendations and clinic policies and procedures. Assure quality controls are run and documented per manufacture and system guidelines.
10.Maintain records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient samples.
11.Exercises judgment in determining work priority. Interacts with nursing units to ascertain critical priorities and verify discrepancies.
12.Assist in the mentoring and training of new staff.
13.Assist in evaluating and documentation of technical personnel competency.
14.Perform all other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION:
High School Diploma or equivalent required.
Associates Degree in related field of study preferred.
REQUIRED SKILLS:
• Basic Life Support certification.
• Familiar with and practice the standard universal measures to prevent contamination and/or infection.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
• Ability to work well with individuals of diverse socioeconomic, cultural, and intellectual backgrounds.
PREFERRED SKILLS:
• Medical Lab Technician Certification through the American Society of Clinical Pathology or equivalent.
• National Certification in Phlebotomy
• Previous medical assistant experience.
• Knowledge of medical terminology.
• Knowledge of universal precaution procedures in medical safety practices.
• Previous experience working in a hospital, clinic or physician’s office preferred.
• Previous experience in clinical lab science.
• Bi-lingual preferred.
