Medical Interpreter

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Medical Interpreter is responsible for relaying accurate medical information and facilitating the successful delivery of patient services to a diverse language segment in compliance with all office and clinic policies and procedures, particular relating to patient confidentiality and informed consent. The employee must be willing to learn essential skills to enhance this position.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Provides accurate translation, both written and spoken between patients and providers.
  2. Responsible for written translations required in patient encounters including, but not limited to forms, care instructions, medication schedule, patient letters, or other identified documents and patient materials.
  3. Accurately and completely interprets conversations between providers and consumers.
  4. Establishes and maintains quality customer service and positive interaction with all users.
  5. Communicates with patients and representatives regarding health care information.
  6. Completes documentation as required in the agency health records system.
  7. Maintains strict confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA policies and standards.
  8. Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Interpreter/Translation Certification and/or Certification of Competency from approved training program or willingness to complete a program. Or 1 year of experience in related field preferred.

REQUIRED SKILLS:

  • Fluency in English/Spanish or one or more other desired languages, both oral and written.
  • Ability to work well with individuals of diverse socioeconomic, cultural and intellectual backgrounds.
  • Familiarity with the medical profession and its privacy laws (HIPAA) as well as other state and federals laws applied to medical interpreting.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Able to exhibit a high level of confidentiality.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Proactive and independent with the ability to take initiative.
  •  Ability to work within a team.

PREFERRED SKILLS:

  • Interpreter/Translation Certification and/or Certification of Competency from approved training program or willingness to complete a program.
  • Knowledge of Medical terms and terminology.
